Scenography design for the collaboration project “GOOD PRINTER” by GOOD GOODS ISSEY MIYAKE and nomena.

A massive machine created by nomena clumsily applies ink onto fabric with such awkward gestures that one feels compelled to cheer it on. Visitors can slightly influence its movements through a controller.

Interactive installations are inherently prone to malfunctions—yet under no circumstances should ink end up staining either the visitors or the gallery itself. We wondered whether this very pressure could be turned into the basis of the scenography.

Normally, nomena must ensure that their machines never fail. But for this project, we envisioned a space where failure is not only acceptable but welcome. The entire room—floors, walls, even columns—was wrapped in translucent vinyl sheets, creating an environment where no matter how much ink spills or splatters, it is never a problem.

The result is a softly diffused enclosure filled with gentle light and an atmosphere of ease. As the exhibition unfolds, colorful ink traces accumulate, gradually transforming the semi-transparent space into a vivid canvas.

The aim was to create an environment of tolerance, companionship, and care—one where mistakes, errors, and blunders can be embraced as charming elements.
